Description:

The ECDIS course, training in the basic theory and use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems is designed for all deck officers who are in charge of navigation and watchkeeping on vessels equiped with ECDIS. The training comprises all safety-relevant aspects and, for this reason, aims beyond the use of operational controls of the system. The course as designated takes into account the International Conference on STCW (Standard of Training, Certification and Watch keeping 1978 and 1995), which defines required training, ref. STCW 95, Chapter II and Table A-II/1 and A-II/2 and STCW Code B-I/12 and B-VIII/2 ? 3.1. Candidates successfully completing this course will be able to use ECDIS for the purposes of the navigational watch. They will be able to operate ECDIS equipment, use the navigational functions of ECDIS, select and assess all relevant information and take proper action. The trainees will acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the basic principles governing the safe operation of ECDIS, including ECDIS data and their presentation, as well as the system-related limitations and potential dangers. They will be able to generate and maintain displays, to operate basic navigational functions and all specific functions for route planning as well as route monitoring, to use and select proper navigational data and to display the data in appropriate manner. They will also be able to perform updating. In addition, they will have knowledge of the principal types of electronic charts and essential legal aspects of the use of ECDIS.
